I have noticed most people on here that have done the ls1 swaps have 2 wd trucks. I have a 4wd truck however I am disconnecting the front drive shaft because I blew my 10 bolt and am having a 14 bolt re-geared with 4.10s. I dont wanna gear the front with 4.10s seeing im not driving the truck in the winter anymore and am hopefully putting the T56 in at some point. Do the LS1s swap in the same in the 4wd trucks as with the 2wd? I think the frames are different in front.

thanks,
Mike

They should swap in exactly the same since there were no differences in engines from 2wd and 4wd. Oil pan configuration would be the only difference. Have you cnosidered tossing the transfer case along with the current engine and transmission? You'll have less parasitic HP loss with it gone plus you'll save another 100 lbs of weight you have to take with you everywhere you go. That should improve your 60' times and fuel mileage.

You could also get rid of your front diff and gut your front axle shafts down to the hub stubs.

Also might want to consider where the oil filter is going to be once the LS1 is sitting in your truck. Dont want it stuck behing something where you cant reach it. That would really piss me off having enjoyed a new engine for 3000 miles (500 of its brand new internals) only to have to take it all out to chane the filter :p

Oh yes transer case, old engine and tranny all are getting the toss. I just put in a 14 bolt rebuilt with Yukon 4.10s and an eaton posi. I blew up my ten bolt. Anywho the front drive shaft is already taken out because I didnt wanna change the gears in front and I dont use it in the winter anymore so I dont need 4wd. I will gut as much as I can when the time comes. I just wanted to make sure that the swap was the same with the 4wd frame and components.

thanks,
Mike

All I had to do was use the oil pan from a truck motor (4.8,5.3,6.0 they are all the same).

I used the truck pan last time on the 2wd. Allen used the f-body pan on his 2wd. Most everyone I know used the car pan but we're mostly 2wd.

Also I believe the truck pan holds about 1 more quart than the F-body pan too.

f-body will show full on 5 quarts, my 5.7 L31 shows full on a little more than 5 1/2 so yah the truck pan is definately a tiny bit larger. Hey Greg, give me an LS1 and we'll try it in my 4WD

I wasn't referring to the 5.7 L31 vortec truck oil pans. I was talking about the LSx 4.8,5.3,& 6.0 pans. These hold 6 quarts.

The L31 pan will not bolt to a LS1 anyways.
