Couple questions on 5.3 to 6.0 swap

    I just recently got a 2001 LQ4 with 80,000 miles to swap into my 99' 1500 Silverado Z71.
    Paid $950 for it.

My only concern on this swap is that the motor might not fit on my stock trans because of a crank issue. I am a little clueless to this, but I remember reading that there was something different about the early motors.

Does anyone know if this engine with be a direct swap??

I was also wondering if there is anything I should do to this LQ4 before i put it in other than a generic tune-up; Ac-Delco plugs, wires. I do plan on getting the PCM tuned, although i dont know by who yet.

Also, what king of MPG are you guys getting out of the 1/2 tons with 6.0's??

    thanks for the help,

    Aaron

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure its a direct swap. There's a bunch of guys on here that are pretty good with tuning software, so just ask around. But most people use Nelson Performance

direct swap, everything plugs and connects into place!

you will need to get a tune for the swap though!

check the flywheel, if its flat, it won't work as a swap for a smaller gen3 engine. If its dished it will be a straight swap. The correct length crankshaft will have a snout almost flush with the rear motor cover. if is sticks out 1/2" then its a no go.

    Another question.

Is there a code within the VIN# on the engine that will prove it is an 01'?

I just want to make sure I am getting what I asked for because they seem a little shady...

Whats raising a red flag is the part discription on the receipt says the motor came out of a 2001 1500 Silverado...I am a little skeptical. But the motor should be here tomorrow.

Pull the flexplate. If there is a removable spacer, you are OK. IIRC 1999 and 2000 LQ4's had the longer crank, after that, they used a spacer. Just remove the spacer, and use a 4L60E flexplate. I have an extra if you need it.

Also, check your trans. See if the bell has the 12 O'clock hole. If it doesn't it's not the end of the world, but since the 6.0 (or any LSX's for that matter) does not have the 2 O'clock hole (looking at the back of the engine), the attachment is not great. Useable, but not great. If your trans has a divorced bell you'd be better off trying to upgrade to a LSx bell. That way you get all the attachments, including the ones to the oilpan. Much beefier..

Yeah, the VIN's 10th digit is the year, the 8th is the engien code. The displacement is cast into the rear face of the block on the LH side of the rear cover up towards the top.

PM me the VIN, I can decode it, as well as look up the warranty history for the truck it came out of..
