    Engine Knock started 282,375 miles

Anyone that read my post from http://www.ls1truck.com/forums/lsx-t...tml#post185561 Thats what I'm asking about.

Since I know its actual engine knock and not just a sensor, what if anything is there that I can do to keep it from getting worse?? Premium gas, synthetic oil for high millage?

I will be getting the lq9 soon, or as soon as this engine quits.

I can't let it go now.. moving and have no money.. so I want to baby it as much as I can.

And what kinds of things actually cause the knock? Like I said it sounds like a woodpecker, and increases with engine speed and doesn't stop once its warmed up.

Please any help will be highly appreciated! Thanks

Id start with an oil change and some heavy weight dyno oil...

Depending on the knock, it may or may not be reversable/coverable.

Could be valve chatter...could be alot worse.

If your knock sensors and PCM are good, it should retard timing to keep the knock down. You may have a bad knock sensor. A 6.0 swap and new knock sensors, and a new tuned PCM should cure the problem

Seriously, Id change the knock sensors first. If that doesnt help, get the PCM re-tuned. If that doesnt help, go 6.0.

So a bad knock sensor could allow the engine to knock.. and replacing the sensor would get rid of the knock, but not what caused the knock in the first place? Right? Good temp fix.

So what if any bad side affects are there to retarded timings? Other than less performance, maybe gas millage.

Sometimes an exhaust leak will sound like a knock. As things warm up bolt grow longer and leaks start, sometimes.

Every truck I've logged stock has pulled at least a couple of degrees knock. So maybe the knock is coming from the standard tune not being perfect for every ltruck. If the knock sensors are working properly it should not be audible. More than likely the knock is from wear and tear. I'm just trying to offer a little assistance

Sorry didn't mean to come across harsh. I appreciate your help. And a few people I've talk to so far all think the sensors are bad. Thanks for you opinion on this though. You actually helped me!

if you have knock coming from the bottomend. i would park the truck and plan on pulling the motor. chances are the rod bearings are shot. if you keep driving this motor you wil pass metal shavngs thru-out the entire motor. its not Knock sensors, its not valve chatter. at that mileage you got the life of the motor and its just worn out. be happy you seen 282k miles. dont drive it anymore. if you have an oil cooler then youll be passing shavings thru that. that will be a pain to clean later on down the road and can effect the new replacement motor
Yeah that is what I'm afraid of..guess I could find a 5.3 to put in there. But no cooler, and I dropped it off at the shop today so lets see what happens with that.

So the consensus is that it worn and its probably its time to be pulled.

I'm not sure how the tune could cause an idle or non-load knock.

Dropped it off at the shop today. He called me and said the sensors are bad, and he couldn't hear a knock. I've listened twice today and couldn't hear the knock.

But lets talk money for a second. About 60 for each sensor, 105 for the intake gaskets, 75 for the harness, and maybe 3 hours of shop time 65 an hour. So about 550 total repair.

Yeah I can do the repair myself.

If the knock comes back that engine is gone! Don't have the time or money to play with it.

Nice excuse to get my tb p&p

From my experience, the intake gaskets are re-useable, you shouldnt need the harness, and if you do it yourself, it shouldnt take but about 1 hour at the most. So you'd be out $120 for the sensors, and $18 for a case of beer.
