5 speed standard from 4.3 to a 5.3 swap?

i was strolling around the local u pull it junk yard and found a 1999-2002 silverado with a v6 and a 5 speed standard i was wondering if this trans will bolt up to a v8 silverado with a 5.3? if so i would have to get everything to do the swap from the clutch pedal and clutch assembly to steering column to the flywheel clutch bellhousing trans mount and crossmember and driveshaft yoke i am interested in building a 1999-2002 reg cab 2wd street truck and i want a standard and i was wondering if this tranny will hold up to the v8 and will it bolt up mainly?:hyper2:

i think the v6 might have had a smaller trans, but the one that cam behind the 4.8 is a pretty decent trans. I have on win my shop from my truck. It will be a huge hassle going from auto to manual. you will need pedal assay, master cylinder and accessories, diff cross member or modify yours, pilot bearing, clutch setup and flywheel, and of corse cut a huge hole in the floor. speaking from experience, stay auto unless you go with a good trans like a t-56. just my .02

Yes it will bolt up just fine. I'm still running the 5speed that was in my truck when it had a V6. You'll need to use a flywheel (oddly enough I got mine from Mic ^) and clutch from a 4.8 5speed truck.

I can attest that the NV3500 will not hold to a lot of mods. Like a 6.0 haha. I left it when I went from a 4.8 to the 6.0. Lasted a while but eventually had serious issues. Then I blew the clutch to pieces.

^^ funny... because i've been following a guy's build for a few years who started with a 4.3 then went to a 454BBC then to a 8.1 - all with a bone stock NV3500 and beating the crap out of it every day. then he slapped a turbo on the 496 & the trans is still kickin. even the project manager for the Joe Gibbs Silverados personally told me they didn't worry at all about the blown 4.8 pushing this trans.

and all 1/2 tons used the same 5-speed: the New Venture 3500. i've been running a bolt-on 5.3 with my 4x4 for 3yrs now with no issues.

and to the OP - make sure to get the purple jumper wire out of the fuse block for the clutch safety. click my sig pic & scroll down to where i talk about the details. and my personal opinion is that if you're swapping a 2WD from scratch, you'd be better off using a T56 from a GTO or F-body

Well, my NV3500 had a few miles on it. Like close to 200k. I threw in a TH350 to get me by. I now have a LT1 T56 sitting in my garage almost ready to go in. Just a few more pieces and I should be rocking a six speed soon. I have to buy the LS parts in a week or two. I can't wait. Turning over 3000 rpms on the freeway has gotten old.

What clutch pilot bearing and throw out bearing do you use for the 5.3 nv3500 and everywhere else I read there saying to use a 4.8 flywheel. Is that only because 5.3 didn't come with a manual trans from the factory?

It's rare, but a few 5.3s came with this trans. At least I've read that somewhere. As for the 4.8 parts, almost everything is identical to the 5.3. Just order get the 4.8 parts from Napa and you'll be good to go.

yep - even the GM parts catalog says the 4.8 & 5.3 clutch stuff was the same, so it'll work.

I ran a nv3500 with a cammed 6.0 4x4. I got a solid 6 months out of it lol. Mine had a 100k on it when i did the swap, so it wasnt fresh at all and it was the stock clutch. But i really dont know how much longer a fresh one would of lasted to be honest. But it was a winter truck so it saw an awful lot of 4x4 in 12" of snow too. Either way it was fun
