Rear end is done in my truck. 05' z71 5.3. Question is what to replace with? I've been wanting to change ratios. Running 3.42 now. Cam, longtubes, stall and tune coming soon. I'm thinking 4.10's ! What type rear is good and can I run 4.10 in rear and leave fronts 3.42 as long as I don't use 4wd. Eventually going to do both as finances permit. I'm also on the stock 17's. On the last track day I ran 15.0 at 93 with current setup. Thanks
the whole forum will say tru-trac. 4.10's if your not on highway much. 3.73s if you run the interstate.

So can I run the 4.10's outback and leave front alone? Just don't use 4wd on any hard surface.

Talk to ron (he's one of our vendors) GREAT prices on gears/true-tracs. Labor however, is lil more money.
You could try junkyard searching for a 4.10 equipped front diff from a Z71, save some money that way.

Yes, pull front shaft.
X2 on a factory 4.10 diff. Not a z71, but a V-max truck. They had 4.10's, i don't believe a z71 ever came above 3.73.
As of tips, get a few extra crush sleeves and take your time. Start out using your stock shims on the pinion and carrier if you can. Went from 3.42's to 4.10s with a yukin posi. Used the stock .035 pinion shim depth (new shim) and even got lucky by using the stock carrier shims. Came in at around .007/.008. Not 100% sure, it was a few months ago.
There is also a trick to the pinion preload. Once you think you have it, put a 1/2 breaker bar on the pinion nut at horizontal, let it go and is should fall at a medium rate. How Chris did mine and never made any noise
im in shock id a z71 never came with 4.10s...
thats vary by weight of the breaker bar. but itd be close enough
There were plenty of Z71 and even 4x4 non Z71 1500 trucks with 4.10s. I've even seen them in Suburbans and Tahoes.Quote:

Auburn Gear makes an awesome limited slip differential with a torque lock feature. And they really last. If you want the benefits of limited slip with trutrac locking when you want to gouge the floor with the gas pedal, they are a good choice.

What is the down side to trutrac in the snow I know some people have said thats on downside? Something better for the snow out there?

I'm surprised the g80 lasted this long. I put 150,300 HARD miles on it. Never pulled diff cover until it started making noise and acting up. I can get a replacement g80 ready to go with a warranty for 279.00. Or I can spend a few extra hundred and get one I dont have to worry about breaking. Decisions decisions........
It took about the same mileage for my G80..only mine blew up and left me stranded. Don't replace junk with junk, TruTrac and 4:10's are the way to go. I love mine!
@Bryant. What rpm are you seeing at like 65
Instead of pulling the front shaft, you could just unplug the front diff actuator.

go with the tru trac. I made the mistake of replacing a open diff with a g80. Now I have to worry about it. This is of course if you plan on increasing power more.
Yea I'm def doing tru trac. Haven't made s decision on gears yet. I'm prob going to do 4.10. Not positive yet on gears. Anyone running 3.90's. What y'all think?
My opinion if you're going to go 3.90s you might as well go 4.10's. The difference would be almost nil.
