If there is anyone here who lives in the dfw area that could help me with a swap i would really appreciate it. I started on it today going by the swap tutorial on the mechanic forum, and i got all the way to unbolting the trans and am ready to pull my hair out.
Going in is a 2001 LQ4 and my truck is a 1999 Z71 1500.
I actually live northwest of ft. worth off of Eagle Mountain lake.

What problem are you having? taking things apart is the easy part.
I am just having trouble finding clearance to get to the tranny bolts...
would ya'll recommend taking the intake off?
I am also having trouble with the wiring harness that is underneath the engine.
then lastley the AC pump wont unbolt all the way because one of the bolts hit something. Although I can get that off while i lift the motor.

intake off is the easy way to get to them.
Ok...took the intake off and got all 8 bolts off the trans.:hyper2:
Then got off the 6 motor mount bolts.
Then the two ground wires on the drivers side near the bottum, and lastly the hanger on the passenger side near the oil pan that holds those two metal pipes(dont know hwta they are).
Now the new problem is i cant get the trans to seperate from the motor. i guess I am going to wait for my dad to get home from work, because the truck is on a slight incline since that was the only place to do the swap.(i did take off the three 8mm allan head bolt that hold the flexplate to the stall)
Got it!! Just took a little more muscle.
When I got the motor out and started looking at them both and transfering parts i noticed the 2001 6.0 had something the old one didnt. On the drivers side of the engine near were the oil pan and motor join there are two metal pipes that join together near the rear into a square metal box. I will try to get pics tomorrow so maybe ya'll can help me determine what it is and if i need it.
those are oil cooler lines. since my 82 didnt have one i just bought a B&M oil cooler from summit.Quote:

Yea, just swap the block with the tubes, with the cover that's on the 5.3. make sure the gasket is in good shape, if not get a new one.

is there a real difference in running oil cooler lines for efficiency or power?
just dose what it seas cools the oil
Never have considered pulling the intake to pull bell housing bolts. Do what works, I get them from underneath....but I have a lot of tools and lifts. Get a new gasket for the cooler line thingie. The bolts for the compressor come out of all the way but one has to stay with the compressor because the frame is in the way. 4WD is worse.
Ok guys. thanks for the reassurance. Right now I am cleaning the 6.0 and transfering parts when I get gome from work in the evenings. Motor should be dropped in on or before Saturday...
Pulling the intake was cake, and made the top bolt easy. But i am just using normal hand tools.
Would yall also recommend a new gasket for the intake, or is the one i have fine? It doesnt look damaged at all.
What year engine again and does it have orange intake gaskets or teal? If they're orange, replace them regardless of age or mileage. Beware they're $100 per pair from the dealer retail.
The engine is a 2001.
Just went down and looked at the gaskets. They were black and orange...

Got everything lined up!!
Took about three hours after i got the motor bolted to the trans. Come to find out I left a stud in the trans that lines things up. The motor had a stud in the same place, so after pulling that out it was a breeze.:LOL:
I cranked her for about three seconds, and nothing. Cranked it again and it started right up.
I havent test driven it yet because I need to bolt up the exhaust and put antifreeze in, but everything seemed to look normal for the short time i had it running.

Next decision... keep the 5.3 for a project motor or sell it and use the money on mods??:burnrubb:
And now the fun starts. The synthetic oil found a crack to leak out of.
Oil seems to be coming from the right side of the engine up high. It only seems to leak oil when the motor is running, so i am assuming a valve cover gasket...i hope.
I popped the metal cover piece off of the trans to see if it was coming from the main seal, and there was no oil in the bell housing; so i think i am safe on that...
i havent really gotten to look things over really well yet because it is hot, but what would ya'll guys say? Maybe it one of the sensors on the back???
