:grr: when I leave in the morning my truck sounds like it has a rod knocking. It just started this morning was wondering if your trucks were doing the some thing. (the knock goes away about a 1/4 mile down the road) It has been down in the low 30s here recently. :eek:
Sounds like the dreaded cold start knock.
GM says its normal.....How many miles on your truck? 5.3, right?
5.3, auto and i just truned 56k tonight :nx:

It sounds like cold start knock/piston slap. These motors are infamous for it, mine did it from day one....until it hit 80k....and that was all supercharged.
All gen III engines have reported some kind of knock.Quote:

I didn't post this but here's what happened to my truck about a month ago.
Everytime I got in my truck I had a terrible knock, I mean a noticalbe one, where ppl would look lol. It sounded like someone hitting my block with a hammer.
It continued to do this for about 3 days, everytime I'd start it up , the same thing as you, drive it for about 2mins or less than a mile and it would quit.
FIX for my engine: I changed the oil. I always use Mobil I and fram filters. It kind of seemed like the oil was being restricted somehow, mabye the filter was clogged or a passage was clogged.
It sounds funny, but mine has never knocked like this before and then I changed the oil, try that and definitely keep us updated, I'd like to know too.
This wasnt the normal cold start knock everyone has heard, mine was a loud ass hard tap, that was very noticable.

I had this same problem with all the 5.3L we have here...pass 20K km they all start doing that kind of "uncharged lifter noise" for a while in the mornig and then in a minute or 2 it stops or start fading away.
Then the rest of the day it starts and no noise at all !!!!!!
The way I solve this problem is I use in normal 5.3L mineral 10w30 oil (perfromance 5.3L mines synthetic LOL) and change the oil every 3500K cause the trucks of the company works on harsh evyroments ( lot of dust form construction road and short trips)
As they reach the 20-25K each time I put a "Motor FLush" from TOP1 brand. with the old oil. Left it there for 10 minutes at idle and then dump all the oil and replace with fresh oil and new filter (balwind here) and none of the drivers have ever complaint again about the morning start noise.

Most of our 5.3L have reached and passed 250K km and have no issuess at all. Not even oil comsumption, some had develop an oil leak on the rear crank seal and some at the oil pan area.
The first is a Pain in the ass to change, but the second one is always some loose bolts. tight them and problem solve.
The only 5.3L I repair so far is mine, but was the highest milled engine past 400K and the piston came out with the ring lands broke. some pics if u want!!!!
But I guess I'm the only Ass hole that always live with the pedal to the metal :)

My theory..Varnish....but it is not suppost to happend in synthetic oil, but happens too, so no clue !!!!
Not talking here about the piston slap some of those have at every start and the dealers here say it's normal. is other sound. Piston Slap is just like a turn on "knock" for a sec or less.
The 2 times i heard the noise it was a broken ring land. it'll still run ok, but when it's cold (before heat expansion) it'll knock pretty bad.
wifey said the same thing about her 01 HOe. it has been cooler lately so... but next oil change ill put mobil 1 in both. hopefully that helps. her truck has like 60,000 or so..well see.
i use mobil 1 and still get it. turn up the radio and let it idle a good 30 secs before you go.
im sure by now he's used to it, seeing as this post was made in 2004! :nutz:
Started using Royal Purple and it cut back on it dramtically, all of my buddies with the 5.3 and even me sometimes when its real cold have it so no worries
It's was in the low 30's for a few days so I have to let the truck warm up to defrost the window anyway. When I get out of work and it's still only in the 40's I hear it for about 20 sec when i'm driving. 80kmi on the clock.
I've used Royal Purple since day one and still have the same problem. GM put out a TSB saying the piston to cylinder head is very tight and carbon forms on the piston. After you run it for a bit the carbon is broken up and everything if fine until it cools down again. They say if you get a fuel injection service done periodically it will quit. Most repiar shops should be able to do this. They use a tool that vaporizes a cleaner and sprays it into the intake while it's running.
Try the "Engine Flushing" a couple of changes...don't be shy.
U'll thank me latter...just related to the noisy morning start with a kind of lifter uncharged sound.
Not the piston Slap from the Gen III, that has no cure hahahahaha
