Iim new, glad i found this site, have a sweet rcsb 97, the body and chasis is all done the way i allways wanted it, pumped up the 5.7 with bolt ons, it rips for a truck but i want way more. LS engines seem like a good idea, what do i need ? the engine, tranny, computer and harness, can i use my factory computer? how about engine mounts? I've seen the s&p headers now so that's taken care of , any help greatly appreciated.
Feel free to look through the conversion forums. There's a large number of swaps that have taken place, and most all have tried to post as much detail as possible.

Thanx, that pinned topic at the top is good, there's so much info on this site it's awesome. I've been contemplating this swap for awhile now, my L31 runs great now and pretty hard but like I said I want way more, thought about ati's procharger for it, but the L31 injection is just to restrictive, I might even end up just building 383 or 396 out of my L31 topped with AFR heads and aftermarket injection, maybe a holley stealth ram or accell, I just don't know anymore there a so many opions and there all expensive, but I will have something, I need the power.
If you stay with the L31 I'd go with a ZZ383 and GM Ram Jet injection. I almost put that setup in my truck but I'm glad I went with the LS1 instead. Same power, same price and better gas mileage.
Nitrous, I'm glad you replied, I saw your truck on dragtruk.com, nice truck, you did a lot to the l31, how did it run with the comp cam and mass air throttle body combo? on your ls1 swap did you use your stock computer or a corvette/camaro one? I've been throwing a lot of numbers around, and it seems to me the cost will be close to the same for an ls1 swap versus a custom fuel injected swap. just a matter of different motor mounts and tranny.
Thanks bro, actually the lower end was stock. I was going to put the ZZ383 with the Fastburn heads in and put a ram jet fuel injection on top. After my coworker put the LS1 in his Porsche back in 99 I decided that's what I was going to do since gas prices were elevating. The L31 is an awsome little motor and I'll miss it but you can't beat the performance of an LSX based motor. The cam had a little lope to it but not too much and the 1.6 rollers helped out a bunch. I had 520 to 522 lift and it started pinching the oil seals and finally broke a spring after 70,000 plus miles. They stock heads are only good for somewhere in the .470 range without machine work. The fastburn heads will get you up over .520 lift. All of the bolt on's really helped out with the Nitrous but if I was to do it again I would have gone for more cubes. There's no replacement for displacement. I was running in the upper 13's with Nitrous and it was all hidden in the air box. I had an MSD Digital6 Plus that retarded the timing and bossted spark. In fact I have another brand new Digital6 Plus I need to sell. If you have the time Go with an LS2 or build you a big bored block with the L92 heads. You'll need to swap the PCM from the truck to an F-Body or Corvette since it's different. You can use part of your stock harness to run your accesories and tie it into the LS1 harness. Just don't tear the truck harness apart without saving what you need. I know alot of guys who wish they would have kept alot of the old wirin gthat was in it. I was able to make everything work on mine without adding anything to make the tach or speedo work and using HPTuners. Good Luck!
High 13 teens, pretty quick for an extended cab, juice will do that though, there was another x cab on dragtruk that really caught my eye, it was a black 97 on air with 20's. I can't believe how fast it was 12.7 with the stock l31 yes stock, only topped with a ram jet manifold and an ati procharger, that would haul as my shorty. I've had my truck for eight years and tomorrow will be it's first time at the strip, I'm worried I'm going to be depressed after I see how slow it is , took the 20's off and the 15 are back on for some traction, we're at 3400 feet though, so that don't help, oh well I can see my paychecks going bye bye allready. so you ran the whole 150 shot on the l31?
Yep, Over and over and still had room to play! MY old engine is in the garage and no damage except for the broked valve spring and bent pushrod. I'm putting it back on my LS1 right now. Just looking at different options. I'm building and testing some plates to see what I like best. I'll keep everyone posted as I progress. Won't be as fast as some of strokers but will be plenty fun.
