L9H or L96 into 98 2wd
Hi,
I am getting ready to drop a L9H or L96 (with VVT) into a 98 ext 5.7 2wd. Most of the hardware is well developed, with lot's of good hints on this site.
I am mainly concerned about integrating the donor ECM (PCM) into the 98....
-do I eliminate the 98 ECM?
-can the 98 OBDII port be spliced into the donor ECM?
-will the 98 gauges still work on the donor ECM?
-will the 98 comp mirror work? How does one activate the ambiant temperature (off topic)
-I expect the donor ECM will wire into the donor trans?
Does the rad need upgrading? to the donor rad with fans.....easy fit in the 98???
Is the L96 2wd trans output shaft the same as the 98?
Just a start....
So far I have a nice low-mileage truck with a bad motor, 20" Escy wheels, and 2/4 lowering kit, and 9.5" rearend.
To drive daily and tow a travel trailer...
Any and all comments welcome!!

Hi,
Guess I should have been clearer about how awesome RedHeartBeat's recipe is. Still looking for more details around the PCMs from these Gen IV units.....or maybe I need to find a "harness fairy" like Red does...lol
From other webs, I believe I want a L96 with iron block, VVT, 9.6 CR for regular fuel, or E85 and hopefully the fuel management scheme that drops half the cylinders during low load. This should give me reliability, gas mileage and sufficient power to tow an RV trailer. I have yet to secure the engine and trans (6 speed auto), but am trying to confirm what I am looking for and in what, and how many challenges lie ahead.
Any comments from experience on the Gen IV's, particularly the L96 2wd?
-cooling?
-output shaft configuration?
-the 6spd auto is supposed to have its own PCM
-looking more like I keep the 98 PCM for the ABS, what about speedo and cruise?
-any other functions to keep routing through the 98 PCM?
Thanx
