broken parts/broken me
97 gmc 4x4, 4l60e and 350 vortec. Lent truck to dad. Dad didn't realize it was running hot and drove until dead. Decided to replace with a 5.3 which I purchased Tues. The 350 had a piece of the #4 piston missing and cylinder wall beyond repair. Pulled motor tonite and busted my bell housing because:doofus:. Would you recomed using another 97 4l60e or getting one the same year as the 5.3. 99' model. Would my transfercase bolt to the newer trans and keep the same driveshaft lenght. Any help would be great. I have to get this truck back on the road ASAP.:hyper2:

I would use your stock 60e.
-
talked to a guy today that has a 4l80e from a 6.0 truck for 600 w/converter
-
Just replace the bell housing only. With the engine out the trans can stay in the truck.
-
Bell housing on a 97 does not separate and the 4l80e will not bolt up to your transfer case...

Found a 350 and trans out of another 97 for 1650. Might just buy both a be done with it. Don't know what i'm going to do with the 5.3 though. Sure would like to use it. I can get the trans out of a 97 or one from a 99 that had a 5.3 for the same price. Too much to think about, but gotta get it done soon:hyper2::hyper2::hyper2::hyper2::hyper2::hyper 2::hyper2:

Wonder if the 60e out of the 97 and new body 99 are the same lengnth. would the transfercase bolt up the same on the newer 60e. Should be able to use my stock driveshaft if so.

Most people will say 98 was the 1st year but there are 97's out there with removable bell. Sorry for my error.
