96 axle interchangable??

Well i wandering around the junkyard today looking for a axle, reason why? well the shock mount on my axle ripped off the axle housing so now my truck is low on one side and traction is a big issue now.

I saw this 96 silverado with calipers and leaf springs in the back and it was a 6 lug! looks excatly like my axle i was wondering if the axle housing would interchange with all my internal axle parts on my 2004 silverado?

I thought this was weird that a 96 had a 6 lug when all the other trucks there that were before 1999 are 5 lug if there arent a 2500 or 3500.

You probably found a z-71 rear end. no idea about the fitment, get a tape measure and a notebook, plus a camera

why don't you just have someone weld on new shock mounts to your existing axle?

Weld on a shock mount

I wanted to weld on another shock mount but every where i take it they says "ohh that axle housing is harden iron and will be almost impossible to weld" and then they give me a price quote of 185$!! im not paying that for just a weld! I can get that axle from the junk yark for 44$ much better price :)

Plus i thought it was stainless steel that was hard to weld??

Sounds like they just don't want to do the job. They would simply have to fab a new bracket, which is difficult to comprehend for some. Then weld it on. REALLY simple job. I know, because I've done it. The axle tubes are not iron, they are regular steel tube. Believe it or not, the axle tubes are just "wedged" into the center pig housing, from the factory. The axles keep everything together. On a car or truck with a clutch that gets dumped alot, the axle tubes can actully turn in the housing. So I also ran a bead all the way around where the tubes insert into the housing. I did a few other things as well. Rears are simple to work on.

the OBS 4x4 axle is 5" more narrow than the NNBS 4x2 axle, this I know. :grr:

let me clear up some stuff for you

88-98 1500s were 5 lug 2wd and 6 lug 4wd

NONE of them EVER came with discs in the back

your 04 silverado has an 8.6 carrier the 96 has a 8.5 UNLESS it has the 14 bolt semi floater which is a 9.5

the 2wd axles are not as wide as the 4x4 axles

someone did an axle swap i'd probably grab the whole thing

i put discs on my 14 sf
