I have put a 2" front level on my 04 Silverado 2WD. I bought new tires about a year ago 255/70/16 and noticed that when I went over a series of bumps I would get a clunking noise up front. Yesterday I put on new 2009 Tahoe wheels with 265/70/17 tires and the noise has gotten worse. I still have the stock shock on the truck and am wondering if I need to get longer ones because of the level and bigger tires. Would the shocks being to short make this happen? Thanks!
possible. i'd check ball joints/tie rods/hub assembly first.
Autozone makes some ghetto shock extensions...you can use that if you MUST...i thought they came with the spacer kit tho...
My bet on the clunking would be your intermediate steering shaft.
The tie rods are good and I've already had the intermediate shaft replaced about a year ago. It didn't start until I put the 2" level kit on it. That's why I'm wondering if the shocks may not have enough extension on them. Actually, I think the kit was a 2 1/2" lift.
It could still be the steering shaft.
I would definitely take another good look at it.
If all is good, try and contact a 4WD/Offroad shop near you and ask some questions.
Replace the GM shaft with a Borgeson unit and the problem goes away most likely.
Well, I replaced all 4 shocks and I figured out what the noise was. When I undid the lower bolts on the front passenger side, half the shock fell out. LOL! The top half was still there and the bottom half was on the ground pouring out what little fluid was left in it. Truck rides beautifully now. Replacing the shocks was a lot easier than I thought.
