Would shifting issues from 1-2 be caused by a bad torque converter? Does it primarily at low rpms. Tranny fluid smells a little burnt, but no metal and no extra noise that I can tell.

nope, bad 2nd clutch band and possible reverse drum smoked.
X2 get it fixed soon or the whole drum assy will need to be replaced. i just rebuilt one that i had to replace the drum the apply piston and the backing plate because it got too hot and warped themQuote:

TC is involved in all transmission actions/gears/stuff. An issue with one gear or one shift is something else.
You could have a servo seal or piston problem, 2-4 band burnt, reverse input drum failed (by the 2-4 band usually), 1-2 accumulator cracked, valve body problem, low line pressure...the list goes on.
I only needed the rear output shaft changed for 2wd to 4wd and the A hole rebuilt the whole tranny. I will just replace it. Anyone need a 4l80e that needs a little work?? Supposedly only 30k miles on it and was real clean...still is.
sounds like a good time to build a solid horsepower rated tranny.. :)
