Thread: 4.10s or 4.56?

    It's set in stone. I'm getting an Eaton posi and gears.
    My question is, is going from stock 3.73 to 4.10 enough? Will there be a noticable difference or should I just jump up to 4.56?
    I have a pretty much bone stock truck except for K&N, flowmaster and HPP3.
    Any disadvantages? Does gas mileage get really bad?
    Also, I'm planning on dropping my baby 2/4 and getting some 20s.
    So again, what do you recommend?

    well you have to know that the taller tires throw your gears off also.

    But to be blunt, throw 4.56 out the window. You'll go 45 and pull 3+ grand on the tach. Plus with a stock motor, you'll fall on your face around 60-70.

    4.10's isn't bad, allen likes his, really nice off the line, my only problem with that is i think he is running 70 mph and pushing 2500 or so.

    If you keep the 3.73's and with the 20's, i'm going to guestimate, you'll have around a 4.10 gear ratio, i'm not how to config it, but i'll ask and get a def answer tomorrow.

    btw, what 20's are you going to run? what size tires? do you plan to bag in the future?

    Just my opionion:
    If you get the 4.56gears, you'll have badass take off (assuming you get traction) and acceleration thru 1st and 2nd.
    As soon as you hit 3rd you are going to slow down a lot.
    On the highway, you forget giving those mustangs a run for thier money, 2nd gear will be useless (you'll never downshift to it) and third will be really low on power.
    It take a lot more power to push such steep gears once you get going. Imagine this, put you ten speed on that 1 gear, and pedal as fast as you can, you'll have good takeoff but once you reach that certain speed, you'll be pedaling you ass off just to keep up or go fast, that's how your engine is with 4.56 gears.
    Most of the high horsepower race cars run a steep gear like 4.56. The have the power at the top end to keep pushing that car.

    I love my 4.10's. Sure 1st gear is pretty much useless on the street, but it does give for a good burn out show. heheh. But on the track, i grab and i'm outta of here. Most stock low 13 z28's on the track are like wtf, i beat them for the first 300-500 feet. They soon catch me though.

    I also lost 6mph on my topend in the 1/4. My best with 3.42's was a 105mph (peg leg and farm tires) and with the 4.10's, my best is 99mph.
    You can see a lot of power was taken to push those gears thru the line.

    On the highway when i had my 3.42's , i took a 02 trans am 30th ann. easy, pull him 4 cars by the time i hit 3rd, there's no way i can do that now with the 4.10's , maybe if i could downshift into second, but the revs are just too high.

    The 4.10's aren't that bad on the highway. I turn exactly 2000rpm's at 60mph with 30" tires. At 75mph i'm at 2500rpm's.

    Hope this helps a little bit. I'd go for the 4.10's, you'll notice a difference and still get decent milage around town.

    im gonna go with 3.73's even with tthe manual for now. i had 4.10 in my other truck, turned 2400 rpm at 70 almost like allen, great performance and i might go with them again someday...i just have the 3.73's already layin around and should give em a chance.

    I got the 4.10s...with my stock 3.73s I run 2grand @ about 70mph on the freeway. If I go 2400RPMs @70 with the 4.10s I dont really mind. Yea, I guess 4.56 would be too high considering I use the freeway about half of all my driving time.
    Yep, I can attest to the 3.42s being good on the highway, MacADaYear has them and when we tried going from 65mph...he burned me all the way to 100mph. But, as I have said before, I like taking off fast, I don't like speeding
    Anyway, I'll let you know how I like em when they're on, and my track time.

    You could always put a quick change in with 5.88's, you might be able to make it through a 1/4. put some 2.73 for the drive home. :ph34r:

    Well, got the 4.10s and Eaton installed last monday. I've gone almost 100 miles grandma style like the break-in period suggests.
    It sucks, I wanna mash the gas sooooo bad
    This is what the instructions for the precision gears reads...

    "Bring axle to normal operating temp by driving the vehicle(unloaded) for approx. 15 to 20 miles...Let the axle assembly cool completely..."
    Did that already...drove it 15 miles in 35mph stop and go traffic, then let her sleep for the night...

    "For the next 200 miles of operation, drive gently, without any heavy loads..."
    I'm gettin there

    "If trailer towing is intended, an additional cycle of 200 to 300 miles break-in is required without the trailer. This is important!"
    So does that mean if I don't do any towing (which I don't...ever) I can mash the gas after 200 chill miles?

    The reason I ask is b/c of the last part which comes right after the last quote I made...
    "To properly break-in a new gear set, a minimum of 500 miles of driving is essential before constant towing."
    So should I do the 500 just to be safe?
    Damn, I'll probably just do the 500

    i'd say after 200miles your good to go, i don't think anyone really goes 200miles before getting on it, hehehe.

    Yep, I haven't even gone past 3Gs on the tach and I can already tell.
    With the 3.73s I was running 2 grand at 70mph.
    Now, I run 2 grand at about 60. Oh well...
    I can't wait to "test" it out. I'll get vidz

    that's exactly what i run at at 2K rpms, 60mph.

    i can't downshift into second anymore, but third is ok,

    i'd rather have the 4.10's than the 3.42's i had anyday
