Thread: Water to Air Intercooler Questions

Question Water to Air Intercooler Questions

I'm going to be installing a water to air intercooler to aid my vortec supercharger on my truck and I have a couple of questions.

1: Do I need to run a surge or overflow tank? (my hx doesn't have any cap provistions and I'm running a vortech style water tank {mini fuel cell})

2: What do I run in the system; ie. distilled water with water wetter, coolent, engine ice.. etc?

My intercooler setup is a Vortech kit pieced together.

    Thanks,
    Matt

if you fill the water tank through a lid and it's higher than the xchanger, then the setup is ok.
there needs to be a vent (the fill hole on your water tank) to release all the trapped air as you fill the heat exchanger.

it sounds like you have it set up fine.

You will want a tank of somesort as your fill point. It needs to be rhe highest point in the system. Also when running your lines try to keep them smooth no kinks, with limited up and downs do no to create any place for air to get trapped. The intercooler inlet should be on the low point and the outlet at the hi point. Again limiting air pockets.

Do you have your kit picked out yet?

First thanks for the replies, I should be good to go then with the vortech water tank.

One question tho, I would like to mount the water tank behind the coolent reservoir tank but for it to fit I need to remove the fender support bracket. Is this ok for every day driving or should I fabricate up a new bracket that will fit around the tank? I would prefer not to relocate the battery.

Turbo6.0, I'm using basically a gm vortech intercooler kit, but I got a heat exchanger that is about twice the size of the standard vortech hx and the intercooler it's self is a vortech unit with a modified inlet side tank and pipe. I've just kinda pieced this kit together over time from my friend e-bay.

I thought I would post up the results. Mind you I did this all for under $250... thank you e-bay and a few of my friends! I still need to clean some things up but other wise I'm happy with the results, as of right now I'm seeing 5* to 10* below ambient temp (65*) IATs while at speed, before the inter-cooler I would constantly be well above 110* when it was only 70 out!

Looks good. No bracket is needed to be replaced. You do loose some ridgedness there but I have ran like that before.
We have a tank that fits there and that support stays in place.

ChargedLQ4 , thanks man your setup/truck looks great too, how does having the MAF after the supercharger affect tuning, etc? Is there any benefit to doing so?
